If you look at the bottom of slashdot you'll notice you get a rather random quote from their database when you visit. Some are very good, some of very bad, but today's had me thinking of the past.
Emerson's Law of Contrariness: Our chief want in life is somebody who shall make us do what we can. Having found them, we shall then hate them for it.
This exactly sums up my relationship with my fourth grade teacher. I hated his guts more than anything, but I learned more in his classroom than I ever did before or after. I complained to my parents that he was giving me more work that the other kids... He flat old told my parents that he was...because I could do more than the other kids. That kind of killed the complaint. I've never been pushed so hard by anyone, or accomplished so much. Most of my extensive vocabulary I attribute to him, along with my excellent spelling. But even he never could make me learn my multiplication tables, I was a seventh grader in an advance math class before I forced myself to actually learn the damn things.
So here's to all the teachers who are hardasses and actually make kids learn to their limits....thanks.
